Moreover, through the data collected from the sign-ups on the application and the ad postings, we have also gathered that there exists a market of such a product, not only in Pakistan but across the world; since people from India, USA and other countries also posted their book ads.   However, it should also be taken into consideration that Mobile Applications targets a niche market, including a smaller segment. Hence, it will grow gradually and not become an overnight success.

Today's Trending.

I survey to know about today's trend. The first question was asked to know whether people used smartphones or not. A majority of 98.2% respondents said that they use smartphones.  It was important to know about the operating system used by people. It has been observed that 78.2% use Android Phones. While 16.4% selected the IOS option and the rest said they use windows operating system. Almost 91% respondents said that they use mobile applications often. This meant that majority people do try out new applications from play store and use these applications often. The next question in survey was related to the need of people for an application to provide the facility of buying, selling, exchanging and borrowing used books. Technology growing fast.

Over two-thirds of the adults have started using smart phones; it has also become the largest source of going online. Increase in 3G-4G culture has risen given internet connectivity at all times. Use of e-books had risen at exceptional rate from 2012 to 2016 but took a 1% dip in 2017. And the market trend shows although e-books had sabotaged the fortunes of printed books they will continue to grow at an exceptional rate of more than 25% from 2018-2022. Also different kinds of apps pertaining to book reading have emerged. In this digital world individuals are placing more value on physical goods.  Facebook pages have emerged who sell books at discounted rates, in relation to increase in no. of books purchased.

Reading and Learning.

Considering the economic disparity among the country men e-books provide a cheap way of achieving the goal of learning. Moreover, individuals have attitudes with regard to reading are social, personal, reflective, recreational. These functions in regard to book reading along with the high costs of book, and governments lack of attention has led to overall demise of book reading culture. Reading as a cultural phenomenon with support from provincial governments has been seen to promote book reading. Example is the famous Hunza Valley of Gilgit-Baltistan. Where civil society has set up community libraries in almost each village with help of village based community organizations. Complimenting this the provincial government has kept the Municipal Library in a very good condition. However, because of lack of attention given to the book reading culture and lack of facilities provided to the public in the form of libraries, the print book industry has seen demise in the country.  The ...

Increasing Internet Usage

There has been 150% increase in the use of internet globally over the decade. This continual increase in the usage of internet provides an opportunity for global marketers to sell their product over the internet and make more people aware of their product through it. Today, 90% of the young adults aging from 18-29 use social media. According to another survey, nearly two thirds of American adults use social media. (Pewinternt, 2016).

Sunday Bazars

If I come to the Pakistani market, most of the people buy used books from Sunday bazaars which are located in crowded areas and are not organized at all. Muniza, an ardent student of history, art and politics says, “I get all my books from Sunday Bazaar” (Salman, 2009). While india, the trend of selling used books online is gaining immense popularity, where startups like Bookkida are gaining immense traffic. (Deb, 2014)   Thus we could say that the overall print book industry is growing with an increasing rate of 3.3% recorded in 2016 (Segura, 2017) and the industry of used books is growing along with it, with increasing sales being recorded every year.

Amazon's Strategy of Books

Amar Toor talks about Amazon’s strategy to open new retail stores, going back to the physical bookstores. He writes about Amazon planning to open more brick and mortar bookstores. (Toor, 2016)   Jesdanum, while commenting on the strategy of Amazon to open up new retail bookstores, writes: “Amazon opened its third bookstore in October, near Portland, Oregon. Miriam Sontz, CEO of Powell's Books in Portland, calls Amazon's entry "an acknowledgement of the inability of the internet to provide a certain retail experience that book buyers enjoy.” (Jesdanum, 2017) Jason Del Rey talks about how Amazon really wants to promote books once again, as Jeff Bezos himself has said numerous times that he loves books and importantly the printed books. “Books are our heart,” Cast, Amazon books chief said during a launch event for Amazon’s first New York City store. “Jeff [Bezos] loves books. Most of our company loves books and so the mission of Amazon.com, the purpose was to help cu...

New books are easy to shop for!

Kate, a blogger belonging to the USA says in one of her blog posts that “New books are easy to shop for. I can always find the latest and greatest edition and I know that the book is in good condition without having to see it in person.” (Kate, 2017). However, she adds that although buying a new book is more convenient because one doesn’t have to worry about the quality and the condition of the book, the cost of it is still a problem. A new book costs way more than a used one and some people may not always have right budget to get the new book all the time from the retailers like Amazon or Barnes and nobles. She further states; “The greatest advantage of buying used is that it’s a heck of a lot cheaper. At my favorite library sale, hardcovers cost just $2-3 apiece, a remarkable discount from the usual $15-25 that Amazon and other popular Internet retailers charge.”   She says that though the hunt for a used book is difficult, but it is fun and one gets to experience going throug...

Pros & Cons of Buying Books Online

Buying Books Online? Pros & Cons? In the research of bookmasters.com listed some of the pros and cons of buying books physically as compared to buying books online. They listed four positives about buying books online, the most important of them being you are able to pick up books by looking through it before purchasing. Other than that, it creates a sense of community and independent bookstores are able to cater their offerings to the local audience which is something that an online retailer can’t easily do. The cons of buying books physically include the price factor. As an online retailer doesn’t have to bare any type of cost associated with operating a store, it’s easy for them to provide books at low price than the bookstores. Other than that, people have less access to reviews, as you can access people reviews online but physically it’s almost impossible to get opinion of those many people. Last con of purchasing a book from bookshop is that they gave a limited stock as ...

Why E-books?

WHY E-Books?? E-books have some advantages over printed books, such as settings and particular purposes. On the positive side, two of the most popular reasons for using e-books include their “search ability” and the fact that they are available 24 hours a day. A study by Macedo-Rouet et al. (2003) presented findings from 47 undergraduate university students. It revealed that e-book readers obtained slightly lower comprehension scores than p-book readers. Human eyes may suffer physical injury from a reading environment that is not optimized for their benefit. In a study conducted by Cynthia L. Gregory, she conducted a questionnaire survey of more than a hundred participants and found out that over 66% of the students preferred printed books over the electronic version if they were given a choice. (Gregory, 2008)  According to Laura Noakes There’s always been a bit of discussion in the book community about whether readers prefer shiny new books, or second hand books. Being a...
